Foam is a material full of tiny gas pockets. How those pockets are formed decides how it feels and what it does.
Open cell and closed cell
Two kinds of foam.
Open-cell foam has pockets that connect to each other, so air moves through it. It is soft, breathes and recovers after pressing. A bath sponge is open-cell foam.
Closed-cell foam has sealed pockets, so it does not soak up water. A camping mat is closed-cell foam.
Flexible PU foam for cushions, mattresses and seating is open-cell, which is why it feels comfortable and springs back.
